You Have the POWER Written by: Lisa Rodriquez, TV Meteorologist, Fitness Model

You have the power to achieve your dreams regardless of your circumstances. Believe in yourself first and foremost. Write down your goals and make an action plan to achieve them, with an emphasis on education, having a strong work-ethic (desiLisa 1re to continue to work hard) and a positive attitude. Regardless of the obstacles you may face, if you do not give up, you will have a harvest of many good things ahead.

Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor grew up in the South Bronx and lost her father when she was only 9 years old. Sonia’s path to success was sparked by watching a Perry Mason episode as she saw the power the Judge held. Also, Sonia’s mother instilled in her the value of an education along with hard work, a powerful combination. Sonia established an action plan and followed it all the way to the Supreme Court.

Decide what career you want, design your action plan to achieve your goals and then go for it. Pursuing a college degree should be at the top of your action plan. I can’t stress enough the importance of higher education. A good education is an essential tool for success and it will give you leverage in a competitive workplace. As you develop your action plan, you will need to include both long term goals and short term goals to chart your path to success. For example, once you select a dream career and the college that will get you there, you will need to achieve short-term goals such as maintaining good grades while in high school and preparing for your SAT exam, to help you meet college admission requirements.

It takes hard work to make an action plan, to stick with it, and to adjust it as needed – never losing sight of your dream. Strive to keep a positive attitude so you can see through the challenges that may arise and achieve the next milestone. Maintaining a positive attitude will help you get through the hurdles in life.

A positive attitude can create opportunities where you didn’t know they existed. I’ve been a TV Meteorologist for many years and as a result of having a positive attitude, I’ve been blessed to have many other doors open for me, providing a wide array of opportunities. Those opportunities range from hosting a cable TV show while I was in college to producing/presenting TV commercials and weather forecasts from my own home weather studio.

A positive attitude will open doors for you, but hard work will keep those doors open. Having a strong work ethic is essential, as everyone will experience challenges in his or her journey. That’s why you need to create a plan, follow it, and be flexible. If you have an action plan supported by a solid education, a positive attitude and strong work ethic, you will be unstoppable. You have the power!

Back To School Blog Written by: Dr. Jarrett Patton, MD, FAAP CEO, Doctor Jarrett PPLLC

Back to School Blog!

It is back to school time already. For parents it is important to start preparing now and here are three things you can do to get your children ready for school.

The first thing to consider is the sleep pattern. Sleep patterns in children tend to get thrown way off during the summer. They tend to stay up later at night and sleep longer in the day. Getting that sleep AAU 1965schedule shifted back to the school schedule can’t be done in one night. It will take a week or two in some cases to switch those sleep times back. Make sure you slowly adjust the bed times of your kids so that the night before school, they are getting their full rest. Most kids still need at least 8-11 hours daily.
Secondly, start weaning down the screen time with your kids. Often, they tend to overconsume video games and television during the summer. Ideally, you want your kids to have less than 2 hours daily. There have been recent studies that demonstrate a certain level of video game addiction that may occur in some kids. You may notice a change in behavior as you wean them off the games prior to the start of school. Pay particular attention to limiting television and video games within 1 hour of bedtime as it can cause sleep disruption and reduce sleep efficiency (they will still be tired.)
Finally, ensure they are getting good nutrition. Children’s brains need good fuel to thrive and survive. It needs a well-balanced diet on a regular interval to work at its best. Ensure they are getting enough fruits and vegetables during the day with a good dose of healthy proteins to fuel their entire body. Keeping their meals and snacks at regular intervals keeps their blood sugar levels in the healthy range all day.

DESTINY DEFINED ME; NOW I MUST DEFINE DESTINY! Written by: Chevonna Johnson

As a young women fighting #EMOTIONS, out of control #FEELINGS and trying to tame my #DREAMS and trying really hard to control #DESTINY.    We try so hard to define it, rationalize with it, disAAU 2066courage it, and in some instances ignore it.  So many times I felt DESTINY laughing at me, dragging me; but at the same time it was inevitable what her desire was for me and you try hard to walk away, shut it out, block your thoughts and even try to redefine her.  You see DESTINY has a way of teasing you, drawing you into her passion and desire for you and yes DEFINING “who you are”, “who you will become” and “how to DEFINE your PURPOSE”!

Don’t think for a moment DESTINY is free, oh yes she is exciting, challenging and a learning experience and I have learned many lessons in my lifetime and some of my outcomes were filled with PAIN, CONSEQUENCES and WISDOM.  The most passionate part DESTINY gave me LOVE to accept “WHO I AM” to embrace my purpose and DEFINE life’s journey for it’s expected end for my purposed DESTINY!

The Refrigerator Effect Written by: Dorian Drummond

AAU 2048It is 8:00am on a Saturday morning, and you my friend have just woken up. Some of you probably had the time of your life last night, while others may have decided to stay in on Friday night. In an ideal situation the first thing you might do out of bed is pray (if you do believe in a higher power) or you might go brush Friday night crud off your teeth. However I did use the word ideally, so your morning wake up probably went a little something like this. One super-hot loud yawn, a very ugly morning stretch, a few scratches on your rear end, with a blurry stroll to the refrigerator aka “heavens gateway.” Now if your Saturday morning wake up routine is anything like this, there is nothing to be ashamed of because we all do it or at least have all done it. Also what is better than waking up and going straight to the refrigerator to have a nice cold beverage or a quick snack?

Now with every step you take towards your refrigerator your mind is scrambling with thoughts on what lies behind heaven’s gateway. Maybe it’s some apple juice, milk, leftovers, or grandma’s apple pie. Please stay with me and don’t get distracted by these delicious treats. As you continue you slowly reach for that handle, and as you open the door your morning excitement has now crashed into a morning disappointment. You just realized you don’t have anything to eat or drink in your refrigerator. Now there are many ways we can handle this situation but the most common one that many of us are guilty of is going back to our refrigerator to open that same door multiple times within the same hour.

If you can relate to this, allow me to let you in on a little secret. You my friend have been caught in the Refrigerator Effect. The Refrigerator effect is a common concept that I came up with that many humans could relate to when dealing with personal situations in their lives. Many may ask what is the Refrigerator effect? The Refrigerator Effect is the process of repeating something that is unproductive, and unhealthy to your well being while expecting a different outcome each time. The harsh truth about this concept is that we already know what the outcome will be. The same way we knew nothing was in the refrigerator after the first attempt is the same way we know that nothing will change after we continue opening the same door.

Many of us will complain and get frustrated and question why there is no food, instead of taking action. Comfort, fear, and pure laziness has clouded your mind so badly that deep down inside you may want change but you just do not know how to go about it or want to fix it. One example could be a toxic partner who continues to hurt you, but has promised to change after taking them back for the 10th time. You don’t leave the relationship because you are comfortable and are scared to look elsewhere. Then what about the job that is paying you well while treating you poorly? You may not be able to leave because of the fear of having to be financially responsible.

Lastly maybe you are interested in starting a photographer company, but every time you get paid you seem to spend your paycheck on pointless things instead of the camera that you have been dreaming about. Whatever your situation may be my question to you is… why do we continue to reopen doors that are meant to stay closed, knowing what already lies behind them? Below I came up with three keys that I hope may help you avoid this pitfall and provide some clarity towards greater change.
1. Self-Awareness
If there is one thing that I have come to realize it is that we are not always as self-aware as we may think we are. With the many struggles we endure in life, the easiest thing to do is to put the blame on others. We may trick ourselves to think that we are not fully responsible and place ourselves as the victim. This is a huge problem and the only way we can fix this is by looking in the mirror and being honest with ourselves. For example if your partner cheated on you, this may be your partner’s fault however it is your responsibility to eventually fix your heart. Do not allow this situation to be the reason why you continue to push away potential mates years later. Being self-aware will allow you to approach your current situation from a logical standpoint and not an emotional one.
2. Faith
You have to believe in something greater than you, no matter how dark your situation is. You must believe that something better is on the way. Faith is something that may be hard to believe in, but you must fight through your negative thoughts. Remember your mind is a powerful tool and it is always listening to what you say to yourself and what you allow others to say to you. In order for faith to work you must take action. You can talk a big game however are you backing up your words with positive action? You really hate your job and you are dying for a way out. You are going to have to put the work in order to search for a new job and stay consistent in your pursuit. You must have faith and remain positive that eventually a new job offer will come.
3. Principles
A person, who has principles, has a reason and with that reason comes power. Your principles are what you stand by; it is the ability to stay focused and to discipline yourself from any temptations. You keep trying to look a part instead of being apart. Stop comparing yourself to other people you see online. While other people do it for likes and attention you must do it because you do not have a choice. If your dream is to start your own photography company, you must stay focused on the task of your start up. You must discipline yourself to save your money and to practice your craft. If you have acquired extra money but you purchased the latest Jordan sneakers are you every going to move forward with your dream?

Hopefully you may find this article to be useful in your daily life, and I thank you for taking your time to read it. Remember that it is never too late to take action or to change for the better. It starts with you. Also remember that you do not grow from comfort. Farwell and god bless, this is a session of Mr. Drummond Talks.

AAU/Parents & Teens Talk interview with Corey Jackson Written by: Chevonna Johnson, CEO-Host

AAU 1944
“Winning Is A LifeStyle” – Corey Jackson

AAU 1944AAU/Parents & Teens Talk hosted by Chevonna Johnson had the pleasure of interviewing Corey Jackson, NFL/Entrepreneur/CEO.   Corey’s journey resonated with me as I know it will seem very familiar to you.  Corey’s journey begins as a young man graduating from high school with academic struggles and working at Walmart for $7.00/hr.  Without a doubt in his soul he knew he had to conquer his DESTINY and knew his PURPOSE was calling him.

Corey couldn’t discredit the fact he was a very gifted basketball player and great athletic. Even though trials come and rebounding back for a car accident which shook him to the core after his car flipped numerous of times and he walked away without many scratches.  He realized with a “CERTAINTY” in his spirit he had to buy a one way ticket to Texas, leave everything he knew, loved and felt safe in his comfort zone.  Destiny was calling him and without a letter of confirmation he bought a one-way ticket to Ranger, Texas with his mind set on attending Ranger College.

This is were Corey’s story really encouraged my soul and #FAITH and #BOLDNESS would either leave him destitute and homeless in a strange place or HEAVEN and EARTH would align with his #DESTINY.  Corey bought a ONE-WAY-TICKET to Ranger Texas with no money to buy a ticket to get back home.  He was more determined than ever to get on that bus alone, little money and no place to stay.  Once he arrived in Ranger, Texas he cold called the Ranger’s head coach introduced himself and delivered an introduction about his excellent outstanding skills as a basketball player.  Mind you he has no tapes, no letter from his coaches from high school, but his persistence of engaging this coach would get him a ride from the bus station to the school.

Corey may have embellished his story as being 6’8 even though he is 3 inches shorter, once at the school the coach let him play one pick up game and shall we say the rest is history.  What I admired about his story is his tenacity, creativity, talent and gifts and when you hear him speak you will understand why he is were he is suppose to be today.  Your story may seem similar but the choices and decisions you make will CERTAINLY enact FAITH to push and propel you into your DESTINY.

Corey says “WINNING IS A LIFESTYLE”!

Take a listen to the show.

Dear Me Chronicles Yes I R.I.S.E Written by: Chevonna Johnson

The day I knew I would R.I.S.E above the pettiness, self-insecurities and self-destructive behaviors was the day I accepted YAHWEH into my life.   The one promise which I held close to my AAU 1929heart was Jeremiah 29:11 (KJV)

‘For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the Lord , thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end. ‘

Jeremiah 29:11
https://www.bible.com/bible/1/JER.29.11

As a young girl looking for the fairy tales in life, as you mature in your mid teens life begins to get surreal and the sudden overwhelming (ness ) begins to cause stress.  Your thought process becomes somewhat scary, but because of your solid foundations that hold your feet flat to the ground, their is this feeling of calm, clear and controlled possibilities.  It is in this moment everything that was taught in birth is brought back to your memory and you realize the strong forces that surrounded you all your life; although to you they may not  appear monumental; but they would become a driving force of inspiration.

The very thought of succumbing to defeat will either make you retreat or align you with your purpose without you even realizing that #DESTINY called YOU! Everyday is a new day to R.I.S.E and be more affective then yesterday, but if you don’t create a #blueprint for life and fulfill goals everything will seem so frivolous and will have no value to your life.  Life has an order the 3 R’s ( RESTORE, RECLAIM, RENEW).

YAHWEH promise is clear in Psalms 51:10(KJV) Restore

10. Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me. ‘

Psalms 51:10
https://www.bible.com/bible/1/PSA.51.10

2 Corinthians 12: 9-10 (KJV) RECLAIM

9.  ‘And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.  10. Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in necessities, in persecutions, in distresses for Christ’s sake: for when I am weak, then am I strong. ‘

2 Corinthians 12:9-10
https://www.bible.com/bible/1/2CO.12.9-10

Psalms 51:10 (KJV) RENEW

10.  Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me. ‘

Psalms 51:10
https://www.bible.com/bible/1/PSA.51.10

Life is freewill to think, Life is freewill to act, Life is freewill to make choices.  While contemplating your decisions about your LIFE remember everything you do will reflect your LIFE!  Life is not promised nor the day or hour you will leave this earth; but while you are here captivate moments and remember you are a living walking story for the next generation and your story will speak LIFE to others.  Yes you will learn to

R.I.S.E (REASSURE, INTEGERITY, STRATEGICALLY, ENDURE) Release your calm, clear and control over every situation and REMEMBER WHO YOU ARE!
